Stability Theory for Hamiltonian Systems

27 Accordingly it can be seen that the crucial terms are the oo-diagonal entries in the Hamiltonian (9.6), or equivalently the terms in the linearized Lagrangian dynamics (9.5) involving the velocities _ u with skew-symmetric coeecients. Since the time of Kelvin such terms have been called gyroscopic, because they are often associated with eeects of rotation, and, in particular, the stability o...

Stability Theory for Dissipatively Perturbed Hamiltonian Systems

It is shown that for an appropriate class of dissipatively perturbed Hamiltonian systems, the number of unstable modes of the dynamics linearized at a nondegenerate equilibrium is determined solely by the index of the equilibriumregarded as a critical point of the Hamiltonian. In addition, the movement of the associated eigenvalues in the limit of vanishing dissipation is analyzed.

Stability of Quasi-linear Hyperbolic Dissipative Systems

1. Introduction In this work we want to explore the relationship between certain eigenvalue condition for the symbols of first order partial differential operators describing evolution processes and the linear and nonlinear stability of their stationary solutions. Consider the initial value problem for the following general first order quasi-linear system of equations

Hamiltonian Systems: Stability and Instability Theory

The solar system has long appeared to astronomers and mathematicians as a model of stability. On the other hand, statistical mechanics relies on the assumption that large assemblies of particles form highly unstable systems (at the microscopic scale). Yet all these physical situations are described, at least to a certain degree of approximation, by Hamiltonian systems. One may hope that Hamilto...

Balancing of Dissipative Hamiltonian Systems

For stable linear input-output systems, the method of Balanced Truncation (B.C. Moore, IEEE Trans. Auto. Contr. AC-26, 17-32, 1981) is a rational model reduction strategy that allows for computable error bounds. A drawback is that projecting the original equations of motion onto the subspace of interest typically fails to preserve the problem’s physical structure, e.g., if the original equation...
